Chamber Music Performance in the community
The Chamber Music Program had a recital at a retirement home in Alhambra, Saturday, September 18. Students who enrolled in the Summer Chamber Music Program performed their ensemble pieces that they had worked on during the summer. Some of them also contributed to the recital by playing solo pieces. One of the residents, a 91-year old lady who taught La Caņada High School for 25 years and retired in the mid-80's, told us how thrilled and proud she was to hear the recital. "There was nothing like this back then at the high school." she said. Out of the nearly 10 years she lives at the retirement home, she said this was "the best program she has seen." Along with Mrs. Vail, many have requested that we promise we will go back to their retirement home to have more recitals there. The receptionist at the retirement home told us it was the birthday of a 99-year-old lady. She has not been out of her room for more than five years but she came down for our recital and was very happy she was there. Students wish they were told about her birthday earlier. They could have played for her a happy birthday tune easily. A therapist came with a lady who had just had a hip surgery and this was her first time getting out of her room since the surgery. The therapist, a graduate of the LCHS, was very excited to see how the lady was motivated by the recital to walked out of her room as a part of her therapy.
Quite a few residents came to the recital. It was obvious they enjoyed the classical music. Many were happily surprised how good our students are. Students were encouraged. They contributed to the community through their performances. It was a win-win!!! |
